Nine-year-old Savannah, of the Carlisle community in Etowah County, was allegedly forced to run laps around her family home by her grandmother as punishment for eating candy. The Etowah County Sheriff's Office says Savannah ran for three hours on Friday, Feb. 17 until she collapsed and began having seizures. She was taken to the hospital on Friday and died Monday, Feb. 20.

Savannah's grandmother, Joyce Garrard, and her stepmother, Jessica Hardin, have both been charged in Savannah's death. Joyce Garrard has been charged with capital murder, which carries the possibility of the death penalty. Jessica Hardin has been charged with felony murder and aggravated child abuse.
