Savannah Hardin, age 9, was a third grader at Carlisle Elementary School in Etowah County.

Savannah's paternal grandmother is accused of making her granddaughter run laps around the house until she collapsed. Officials say the running was Savannah's punishment for eating candy she shouldn't have eaten.

Savannah's stepmother Jessica Hardin has also been charged with felony murder in Savannah's death. At the time of her arrest, Jessica was pregnant. She gave birth at a Gadsden hospital while under the guard of sheriff's deputies.

Divorce records for Jessica and Robert Hardin

Court records show that Savannah's dad Robert Hardin and his wife Jessica Hardin filed for divorce in August 2010.

In the court records, Robert Hardison said Jessica Hardin was "mentally unstable," suffered from "bi-polar disorder" and refused to take medication. He also said Jessica was verbally and emotionally abusive.

Etowah County Sheriff Department press conference

Joyce Garrard's attorney issues statement

Dani Bone, Joyce Garrard's attorney, issued a statement Thursday, Feb. 23, saying Joyce is grieving Savannah's loss and is falsely accused.

Nine-year-old Savannah, of the Carlisle community in Etowah County, was allegedly forced to run laps around her family home by her grandmother as punishment for eating candy. The Etowah County Sheriff's Office says Savannah ran for three hours on Friday, Feb. 17 until she collapsed and began having seizures. She was taken to the hospital on Friday and died Monday, Feb. 20.

Savannah's grandmother, Joyce Garrard, and her stepmother, Jessica Hardin, have both been charged in Savannah's death. Joyce Garrard has been charged with capital murder, which carries the possibility of the death penalty. Jessica Hardin has been charged with felony murder and aggravated child abuse.
