Zombies to invade downtown Gadsden Saturday

Zombies to invade downtown Gadsden Saturday

If see the walking dead roaming through the streets of Gadsden this Saturday, it's most likely not due to the apocalypse. The 5th annual Zombie Parade has been planned for Saturday, Oct. 22.

A zombie meet-and-greet begins at 4 p.m. and the parade through Broad and Chestnut streets will be at 4:30 p.m., according to The Gadsden Times. The event is free, open to all ages and even dog-friendly.

Find out more from the Gadsden Zombie Parade's Facebook page. If you want some ideas for zombie attire, check out the creepy attire from years past on the Gadsden Zombie Parade Flickr account.

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Ahoy there, mateys! Happy International Talk Like a Pirate Day! This holiday, celebrated every Sept. 19,  began as a joke between friends John Baur and Mark Summers during a racquetball game in 1995 and has since grown to international recognition thanks to a column by humorist Dave Barry in 2002 and the viral effect of mentions online.

The official "Talk Like a Pirate Day" website, www.talklikeapirate.com, is a treasure chest full of golden nuggets of pirate wisdom, frequently asked questions about pirates (including "Is it 'Arrrrrrr,' 'Yarrrrr,' 'Yarrrrgh' or what?" and "What does 'savvy' mean?) and a list of pirate-themed parties around the planet held in honor of this day.

Catfish Grabblin'

Catfish Grabblin'

There is a popular pastime in the South that many would classify as “Extreme Fishing.” It’s called “Catfish Grabblin’” or some prefer the term “noodling.” Extreme sports may be a new fad, but grabblin’ has been around for centuries, although anyone outside the fishing community has probably never heard of it.

Truck spills chicken by-products onto busy roadway

Truck spills chicken by-products onto busy roadway

A truck carrying chicken by-products lost some of its load Monday on Meighn Blvd in Gadsden, creating a mess for motorists and shutting down two eastbound lanes of traffic for hours. The spill occurred around 11 a.m. in front of the Corr Wireless store.

Derrick Miller, a Corr Wireless employee, said it appeared that the truck driver slammed on the brakes suddenly, causing the chicken by-product to spill out of the truck and onto the roadway.

Gadsden police and the Environmental Protection Agency responded to the scene for clean up and traffic control.

Two egg rolls with a side of Lortab, please

Among the 71 suspects rounded up as part of the Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit's "Operation Mayhem" Wednesday: the owner of an eggroll stand, accused of selling pills as a side item.

Kahn Posey is free on bond on a felony charge of distribution of the drug Lortab.  The complaint alleges people would call the takeout number, order in code--request the day's "special"--and pick up the pills at the takeout window.  The pills cost 10 dollars apiece.

When Fox6 came to the location at 2225 West Meighan Boulevard to get video, an unnamed restaurant employee called our videojournalist "ignorant and assisine," but never explained why.  The employee kept sticking his hand in front of the camera, even though videojournalist Dixon Hayes had already shot a fair amount of video of the restaurant.

Oreo goes for Guiness world record of Facebook "likes"

Oreo goes for Guiness world record of Facebook "likes"

Oreo cookie lovers worldwide united Tuesday to put the chocolate cookie with the creamy inside on the books as the first brand to hold a Facebook Guinness World Records title.

The company's Facebook page asked fans to "like" a single post in order to earn the title of "World's 'Most-Liked' Cookie." Beginning at 10 a.m. CT, the fan page has 24 hours to generate more than 45,000 "likes" on a specific post. By 1 p.m. CT, the page had more than 50,915 "likes," so the "World's Favorite Cookie" should be well on its way to making history and setting a new record!
